This picture shows a femals Aspen hoverfly - quite often referred to just by its genus - 'Hammerschmidtia' (the full genus and species name is Hammerschmidtia ferruginea) and its just been marked by Ellen Rotheray as part of her study to identify individual flies and map their dispersal. You can see a small yellow dot of paint dotted onto the middcle of the insects back as it sits on her finger, about to fly away. © Ellen Rotheray
