Derelict oil rig

In 2006, a derelict oil rig being towed from Brazil across the Atlantic crashed into the shores of Tristan de Cunha. Sue was the first to alert the authorities to the threat of alien species travelling attached or associated with the rig and was commissioned to return to the island for a detailed survey. When she confirmed the presence of these invaders and the very real threat they might pose to the community's vital crayfish industry, the insurers agreed to tow the damaged rig off the island and sink it in deep water wsell away from Tristan. © Sue Scott
