Osprey colour rings

These are specially engraved plastic colour rings, engraved with a unique colour and letter / number combination. Bird ringing with metal rings has been taking place for many years and identifies individual birds for study - the trouble is that you usually either have to catch them to find out who they are ... or find them dead. On large birds, such as osprey, it is occasionally possible to read a ring number on a perching bird, but the use of unique, individually engraved colour rings and wing tags allow observations and movements to be monitored throughout the lifetime of the bird. Radio and satellite telemetry has increased this opportunity for study even further.
